All over Europe in gardens and yards you can find small little creature called gnomes. These cute little earth dwelling creatures originated in Germany. Since their introduction in the 1800s these little garden creatures have spread to just about every country in the world. They are now seen in yards and gardens throughout the United States and many other places.

It is a good idea to learn a little bit about lawn gnomes to help you choose one for your yard. There are lawn gnomes made from a wide variety of materials. Since they will be outside they need to be durable. Some of the best materials to use for lawn gnomes are terra cotta, ceramic, concrete, or resin.

Authentic lawn gnomes will only be male. The will also have a red hat and a beard. Most often they are in relaxed poses such as resting or fishing. Modern lawn gnome designs will feature poses which are more animated. Legend says that gnomes are nocturnal.

They are also said to possess the ability to know the future and superior strength. This is why you cannot catch a lawn gnome. The three main categories of lawn gnomes consist of leisure gnomes, culture gnomes, and worker gnomes. Worker gnomes can be found with small watering cans or other tools they may need.

Leisure gnomes are found with fishing poles or relaxing with a pipe. Culture gnomes are engaged in cultural pursuits such as music or reading. Make sure that the lawn gnome you select is weather resistant especially at its base. Situating your gnome on top of a flat stone or concrete black will help it stand up to the weather but you still want a material that won’t rot or rust. Those looking for something really special may want to think about getting one which has built in solar lights.
