One of the most favored house plants are the orchids. There are many different species of orchids that can be found naturally and even more hybrids. They are not difficult to grow with the proper amount of care including water, light, fertilizer and air. Although orchids ideally thrive in cooler conditions, there are species that can live in warmer climates.

One of the easiest orchids to grow is the Phalaenopsis orchid plant. This species of orchid adapts well to the environment of a home or office.Different species of orchid’s flowers will last for different amounts of time. The bud of the Phalaenopsis rarely opens up, but when it does, it blooms for two to three months.Where as, the flowers on a Cattleyas orchid plant may last up to a month in bloom from the time that the bud opens. The bloom of orchid flowers vary from several times annually, once a year, to throughout the year.

One more thing that keeps orchids popular to many is its scent. Some orchid varieties emit remarkable fragrances. However, orchid fragrances vary greatly, depending on their species. Some species of orchid plants are subtle and other species are extremely strong. The scents can range from fruity to flowery.Interestingly, there are orchids that smell like familiar scents such as chocolate, lilac, coconut, etc.

Orchids should be planted in bark rather than typical potting soil. They can also be grown in New Zealand sphagnum moss. For orchids to thrive well, they need to be grown in pots where proper drainage is available.Traditional methods of soil potting is not ideal for orchid plants because it cuts off air and blocks water drainage.Orchids need to be watered once or twice weekly to maintain its water requirement. In the summer season, your orchid may require watering for every four to five days.A good guide to know how much your plant needs is the heat: warmer weather means more water for your orchid. The less heat, the less amount of needed water.Orchid plants that are potted in New Zealand sphagnum moss should be water less often then those planted in bark. These plants can need watering only once every ten days.

Depending on the species of orchid, they prefer a lot of light that is not too strong. They do very well sitting in an east facing window.Since many orchid species can be found naturally in tropical conditions, they are used to receiving both shade and sun. However, orchids cannot survive excessive sun exposure.Orchids that are suffering from either too much light will display yellowing leaves. If this occurs you should increase the shade that your orchid receives.Yellow leaves may also indicate that your orchid is not receiving enough nutrients and water. Orchid plants should be fertilized on a regular basis about every other week.If your moss or bark is dry, water should also be applied prior to applying the fertilizer solution to the orchid.

Orchids have a reputation for being difficult to care for, but they don’t have to be as long as you follow certain instructions. You should become aware of which ones are most vital in determining whether or not your orchids are going to be healthy and beautiful.

There are innumerable tips for orchid care that people depend on to help them keep their orchids in the best condition. Following is a look at a few of the key ones. If you’re a novice to growing orchids, you will want to start here, or you’re not likely to progress any further.

Of course, as with all other types of plants, when it comes to orchid care you are going to need to be careful with watering. Water is essential, but you need to use care with the amounts you give them. Either too little or too much can cause your beautiful orchid to die. Orchids require a lot less water than other flowering plants, and instead of watering every few days, it is important only to water them every five to ten days or so.

The best way to tell whether or not your orchid plants need water or not is to lift them up by the bottom and feel how heavy they are. This way you can see how heavy the plant is and therefore how much water is left in the plant. Wait until the soil in the plant is quite dry before watering again.

Another of the most important steps for orchid care is to provide the plant with enough ventilation. The role of ventilation is to prevent the water from soaking directly into the soil, and it also provides the blooms with adequate oxygen.

Caring for orchids involves a number of issues that tend to come up quite commonly. Despite your best intentions, you will probably over water your plant from time to time. If so, it’s important to soak up the surplus water with a paper towel or old rag as soon as possible.

Leaves that appear to be scorched are another concern that many people experience.
This means that the plant is getting too much direct sunlight which is causing the leaves of the plant to burn as a result.

There are a lot of different types of flowers that you can grow, but the orchid is a favorite of many gardeners. Once you know the ropes on caring for orchids, you’re sure to receive years of enjoyment from these beautiful blooms.
