A healthy, green lawn shows pride of ownership and is often the first impression to guests and passersby. While spring and summer mowing, weeding and watering are important, a robust lawn needs care and attention all year. In order to promote a healthy spring carpet, it is important to winterize grass properly.

Winterizing Vital In Cold Climates

Winterizing is particularly necessary in colder areas where winter frost and snow covers the ground for extended periods. Contrary to popular belief, grass doesn’t die in the winter. Rather, it hibernates during the long, cold, sunless months much like a bear or deer. Winterizing is especially helpful if the lawn isn’t in optimal health to begin with.

One backyard plan you can use will help you do your landscaping. You should never go to a garden center and just buy whatever plants you see. This will make your yard look cluttered and haphazard. Draw up some landscaping plans to make your yard look professional and beautiful.

Prepare or Beware

If possible before the first frost, rake debris and leaves from the lawn to allow sunlight and the earth’s nutrients into the soil during the winter. Keeping the lawn free of dead or dying organic matter will prevent disease and mold from setting in. The act of raking also lightly aerates the soil, allowing a deeper penetration of sun and moisture.

If you are interested in a pergola kit so that you can add your own patio pergola, you’ll find numerous styles online. Since one of the advantages of online shopping is being able to find a wide range of merchandise at the best prices, your online search can be much more fruitful than going to a local lumberyard. In addition, you will be able to look at hundreds of photos of pergolas others have installed on their patios, and you can find a lot of creative ways that people have added pergolas in order to extend their living space.

Check The Lawn pH

Before winterizing, make sure the lawn’s pH levels are optimal. PH levels can shift due to rain and leaf cover, so pick up a pH testing kit at a garden center to make sure your lawn is at a healthy level. Healthy pH levels allow the lawn to better absorb nutrients and prepare it for new spring growth. PH levels can be adjusted using specific fertilizer formulated to restore balance.

By properly winterizing the lawn, the beautiful green carpet of springtime is just a few short months away

As you work on the look of your patio or deck area, what are you missing? You may have forgotten to bring some of the yard a little closer to you. Often when we build patios and decks, all the green goes away to create a new ground of concrete, tile or wood. But isn’t the green in the yard the reason you were coming out here in the first place? While we are not advising letting vines and plants take over your patio or deck, it wouldn’t hurt to let them accent the outdoor area.

It’s simple to keep plants on your deck or patio, and under control, using teak planters. And even though you hadn’t thought of this before, you can look like it was your plan all along, by getting planters that match the rest of your outdoor furniture.

Containers with wide openings to display plants are a good choice. They display well and are easy to manage when watering, pruning, and caring for your plants. Sunlight can cause damage to plastic quickly and discoloration and fading makes them less appealing. Terracotta pots are more difficult to manage in sunlight because they dry out easily and plants can become dry.

Great choices for patios or decks are glazed ceramic pots in different colors. Glazed ceramic pots are not only good for water retention and planting, but they come in a variety of colors, sizes, and shapes. Just make sure they have drainage holes to avoid water becoming trapped in the soil and plants becoming over-watered and drowning.

There are companies that specialize in custom creations including teak planters. You will be able to specify just what you want in your teak planters and get the perfect pieces to match the rest of your teak furniture. But do you know what you want? There are generally three types of teak planters you can choose from.

Just about every canopy you’ll find is simply made out of something called Sunbrella or plain old canvas, and while both of these materials offer nice variety in terms of color selection, they don’t do anything to make the area underneath them any cooler.

Closed Sides – Take those same wood pieces and move them snugly together. Now you have closed sides teak planters. These can still offer a more rustic look, or match a paneled table set, but also give you the security that they will hold the dirt and plant in.

Improving your deck or patio can be simple and inexpensive. Container gardening is one way to instantly create a beautiful and welcoming outdoor space without a lot of time or money. You’re just a step away from having an outdoor space you can enjoy for many years to come.

There are seven basic elements that is required when it comes to starting your organic container gardening: Plants, Water, Sunlight, Temperature, Nutrients or Fertilizers, Space, and Patience.

Plants are one of the seven basic elements of organic container gardening because it is what you will plant, grow, and harvest. Obviously, it is what organic gardening is all about. Choose plants that you want and desire to grow and harvest. Foodstuffs or big tall trees may all be grown and harvested using pots and containers. Determine what types of plants or crops you prefer and use them wisely.

Your first step is to take your newspaper and layer it over your topsoil. The newspaper acts as a weed barrier. You could use the commercial weed barrier that you see at many home and garden centers, but newspaper can be free if you convince your neighbors to give you their copy after they have read it.

When putting down your newspaper, I like to double layer it. That makes it “thick” enough to act as a great barrier, but porous enough for water and nutrients to get to the soil. As a side not, do not use any laminated sections of your newspaper as they may not be safe for your garden due to the inks used.

It’s best to wait until it is not very windy out as the newspaper is very light and will blow fairly easily. If you are working on a windy day you might want to throw some mulch on now to keep the paper down.

Organic fertilizers such as manure or dung are the best nutrients to give to your plants. They contain no chemical substances that could hinder the flow of nutrients in the plant’s body. They could also be bought in your local gardening stores and shops.

Any good garden tool set will be sturdily-built, and can have wooden handles or good-quality fiberglass or plastic variants. The better sets have stainless steel bodies, which are long-lasting and do not rust out. Aluminum is lightweight and also will not rust.

So take care to look for these basic items when it comes to the components of a good gardening tool set, and you’ll be sure to get a set of tools that provides you with everything you need, is easy and comfortable to use and also stands the test of time.

Create your Own Landscape Design

Throughout my home, from the library to the bathrooms, the walls are adorned to exhume beauty and uniqueness. As a home designer I have had the good fortune of creating my habitat from all that my imagination holds. Living in the Midwest there are an abundance of months that you are held captive inside your quarters. Being in this environment has clearly given me the opportunity to have my place just the way I wanted it to turn out. Having lived in California my heart yearned for the seasons to change. I needed to see new growth form on the trees and to hear the birds chirp again. I desperately desired to make my outside come alive just like the inside.

As the season finally changed to sunshine and warmth, I could actually feel my body and soul uplifted. I ran around the entire house opening all the windows while humming and smiling thinking of the projects that I could hardly wait to start. There was the entire outside area that waited for my hands and thoughts to work their magic. I could hardly wait to get started.

When a homeowner decides to replace or add landscape lighting, they first have to make a choice of going with either the tried and true electrical low wattage varieties, or the more environmentally friendly solar powered selections.

Whatever the choice, before a homeowner even leaves the driveway to go shopping for lighting, they need to take a critical look at the yard they plan on lighting both during the day and at night.  We will cover the reason why a little later.  For now, let us first consider what our homeowner needs to account for prior to making the lighting purchase.

Whether you prefer elegance, artistic or modern, there are an abundance of styles to match your own. The themes range from animals, nature, floral, sun, moon, to inspirational words. They are available in materials such as: wood, stone, pewter, crystal, glass, and ceramic, marble, iron and resin. Resin seems to be the most popular for today’s garden style. It is most affordable, light weight and is highly resistant to wear and tear for the extremities of weather conditions. You can locate wall plaques that are hand made, hand painted, sculptured or custom made to your specifications.

Once you have decided on your macro lighting needs, it is time to look at it from a micro point of view, or basically, take a finger count of how many lights you may need, and whether they will broadcast a downward spray of light, an upward light stream, or a combination of both.  Note:  You do not have to actually use your fingers to count, unless you use your toes as well.  Try a pad of paper and pen.  I guarantee it will be easier.  Here is the key:  Be cautious not to over illuminate your yard, for the benefit of your electricity bill if you go with electric lights, and because you do not want to go over the top with your lighting.  For that matter, there is no need to.  Your lighting should be subtle, yet add enough of an impact for safety reasons and to supply a nice glow to your property overall at night.  You will appreciate the results, and so will your neighbors.

We finally come to the reason for assessing your needs both at night and during the day.  You need to remember that not only does your lighting serve a purpose, but it also becomes an intricate part of your landscaping decor.  That is unless you have an incredible knack for camouflaging it from view.  Be sure to take that in to account and remember that most of it will be in view.  Follow this pre-lighting assessment and you are sure to make the right landscape lighting choices.  Happy lighting.
